Net Procedures

Net Opening

After the usual and customary best practice of ensuing the frequency is not in use or facilitating a smooth hand-off from the TC net, the Net Controller will read the following “CAN-AM NET ON-AIR PREAMBLE”:
  • Good morning all! Welcome to the Canadian American Net / CANAM Net for short!
  • I am your NCS for today, my callsign is <give your callsign> , and my name is <give your name>.
  • My QTH is <give your location> , approximately # of miles near landmark.
  • There is a different NCS every day of the week. This a controlled net.
  • The CAN/AM Net meets 7 days a week at 9:15 AM Eastern time on this frequency, 7.153 MHz using both SSB and CW modes and CW is optional.
  • Once the Net Controller starts final wrap-ups, usually around 10:45 AM, any check-ins after wrap ups begin will forego their wrap ups due to time constraints.
  • We encourage everyone to download NetLogger (NetLogger.org), so you can see who has checked in and follow along with the net, as well as, use the AIM (Almost Instant Messenger) to facilitate off-the-air communications with others that are on the Net.
  • We have a website CANAMNET7153.com, please email our Net Manager, Dick / K2KA with any ideas or suggestions. If you would like to be added to our net roster and either do not have an email or do not wish to put your email on the net you can email K2KA directly, his email is on the CANAM website.
  • I WILL NOW ASK FOR STATIONS THAT ARE SHORT TIME, PORTABLE, OR MOBILE, PLEASE COME WITH YOUR CALLSIGNS.

Net Operation

Controllers

  • During the Net the Net Controller take check-ins from the air and from Netlogger.
  • The Net controller will make rounds through the list, and call them out in order.

Participants

  • Participants can make QSOs to the next person on the list via SSB or CW if they so choose if the next participant can also do so.
  • Participants may be called upon to act as relays when signal propagation is a challenge.
  • See our Netlogger guide for details on using Netlogger.
  • Note: You do not have to be a member of the Net to participate. You just need the appropriate Licensed Amateur Radio Privileges for this frequency.
The Net logs all contacts using NetLogger available from netlogger.org. Users can see who has checked-in and communicate off-air with each other using the A.I.M. message window. See the tutorial made by Don, VE3KII.  See this image as an example screen layout you can set up.

Net Closing

The Net Controller will read the following:
  • Thank you to everyone that checked in today, tomorrow please check in when your NCS will be <give their name and callsign> This frequency is now returned to regular amateur use, 73!
